Description
Riviera Maya
The most successful tourist destination in the caribbean
During the Classic and Post-Classic periods in Mesoamerica, the Mexican coasts of the Quintana Roo state were part of an important Mayan commercial route that included the coastline of Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.
During the 16th century, after the Spaniards arrival´s, all the main Mayan cities in the area were abandoned. Most of the population ran into the dense jungle fleeing from their new enemy, thus founding small, isolated communities. Many others died off because of disease, warfare, piracy, and famines.
More than four centuries later, when tourist development started on 1970, with the construction of a road from Puerto Juarez and a small airfield, there were only 117 people lived in this area which used to be a fishing village and military base. By then, Cancun Island had only three residents, all caretakers of a coconut plantation.
Five decades after, as an outcome of a successful project, The Riviera Maya has become the most visited destination in the Caribbean Sea. It has an enviable infrastructure which includes a wide variety of hotels, restaurants, night clubs, eco-parks and the second largest international airport in the country which serves an average of ten million visitors per year. The archaeological sites, the Mexican folklore, the mariachi and of course, the charm of its people, add a unique touch that has delighted visitors from all over the world. All these features added to its famous white sand beaches, climate and natural beauties have turned The Riviera Maya into the preferred destination for major international companies to organize conferences and incentive programs.
